Q1: What is Pharmacovigilance? 

Ans: Pharmacovigilance is the science of collecting, monitoring, researching, assessing, and evaluating information from healthcare providers and patients on the adverse effects of medications, biological products, herbalism, and traditional medicines.

 

Q2: According to WHO, what is the minimum criterion required for a valid case?

Ans: You can remember it with the help of short-form ‘PERD’ which stands for:

a. An identifiable Patient

b. An adverse drug Event 

c. An identifiable Reporter

d. A suspect Drug

 

Q3: What is an Adverse Drug Event (ADE)?

Ans: An adverse drug event is any untoward medical occurrence in a patient or clinical investigation subject upon administration of a pharmaceutical product that may or may not necessarily have a causal relationship with the treatment.

 

Q4: What are the parameters for considering an event as ‘Serious’?

Ans: The following criteria deem an adverse event as a SERIOUS- adverse event:

a. Death 

b. Life-threatening

c. Hospitalization or prolongation of hospitalization. 

d. Congenital anomaly 

e. Disability 

f. Medically significant

 

Q5: What are the major objectives of Pharmacovigilance? 

Ans: Major objectives include:

  • Patient safety
  • Understanding the concepts of ADR
  • Prevention of Medical Errors 
  • Public Health Significance
  • Regulatory Interventions 
  • ADR Monitoring schemes.
