Capital Goods Skill Council (CGSC) is a non-profit organization established with the purpose of developing a skilled workforce for India’s capital goods and strategic manufacturing sectors. The council is initiated by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) and the Department of Heavy Industry (DHI), with support from the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC). The headquarters of CGSC is located in New Delhi.
The primary objective of CGSC is to build a strong and dynamic skill ecosystem for the capital goods and defense manufacturing industries in India. Its key mission includes developing industry-based national occupational standards, providing quality training, assessment, and certification, organizing training programs for trainers and assessors, promoting collaboration between industries and educational institutions, and establishing a labour market information system.
CGSC promotes skill development through various initiatives, such as updating and developing national occupational standards, accrediting and affiliating training centers, conducting "Train the Trainer" programs, organizing industry-specific training and skill competitions, and empowering the existing workforce through upskilling and reskilling programs.
As of March 2024, CGSC has developed more than seventy qualification packs, trained over two hundred fifty thousand candidates, certified more than two hundred thousand individuals, affiliated over one thousand one hundred training centers, and certified more than two thousand trainers.
CGSC works closely with several government ministries including the Ministry of Heavy Industries, Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, and Ministry of Defence. It also collaborates with academic institutions such as IITs, IISc, BVOCs, DVOCs, and ITIs. Industry associations like IMTMA, TAGMA, PMMAI, and EEPC, along with private companies including L&T, Bharat Forge, Siemens, Rolls-Royce, BHEL, and BEML, are key partners in its mission.
