About the Team:

The Center of Excellence (CoE) for Financial Crimes Decision Science and Analytics is at the forefront of our enterprise-wide financial crime risk management programs. This team is responsible for developing, implementing, and optimizing automated transaction monitoring rules and processes to identify potential financial crime activities. Leveraging AI and ML models, our team innovates to enhance decision-making in Anti-Money Laundering (AML) efforts and supports the development of risk-adjusted AML mitigation strategies.

Role Overview:

As a Data Scientist in the Financial Crimes Decision Science and Analytics team, you will:

  • Develop, deploy, and validate predictive models to support AML use cases.
  • Gain a deep understanding of American Express's AML program and its decision-making levers.
  • Analyze large datasets to generate business insights and create innovative solutions.
  • Utilize various unsupervised and supervised techniques, including isolation forest and gradient boosting methods.
  • Explore and implement emerging technologies like Generative AI (GenAI).
  • Monitor model performance and set up internal tracking systems.
  • Collaborate with GFCC, FIU, and CFR teams to understand requirements and deliver solutions.
  • Develop end-to-end data science solutions and coordinate with the internal governance team for approvals.
  • Leverage American Express’s network to enhance decision-making capabilities.
  • Innovate with big data and machine learning solutions, focusing on improving existing approaches.
  • Clearly articulate and present project findings to leadership and key partners.
  • Stay informed about developments in finance, payments, and analytics.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Proven track record in decision science with strong technical and analytical skills.
  • Proficiency in Python (including data science libraries) and SQL.
  • Experience with version control (e.g., Git), model deployment, and development environments.
  • Strong foundation in mathematics and statistics.
  • 24-48 months of experience in analytics or big data workstreams (0-30 months for Analyst positions).
  • Ability to drive project deliverables and achieve business results.
  • Effective teamwork and communication skills.
  • Innovative problem-solving abilities and capacity to work independently on complex projects.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Economics, Statistics, Computer Science, or a related field.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Expertise in coding, algorithms, and high-performance computing.
  • Understanding of AML investigations, the payments industry, and decision science frameworks.
